The town of Paraty (4 hours down the coast from Rio) was founded in 1667 and was one of the most important ports of the time. It eventually lost its economic significance to Rio de Janeiro and as a result the town seems to have changed very little in the last three hundred years, unlike Rio which got rebuilt with every generation.
