Here are a few photos of Helsinki between 10:30 and 11 p.m. on a Sunday night. Like most cities, Helsinki gets pretty deserted at that time on Sunday (on Fridays and Saturdays people stay up quite a bit later). They the empty streets are hardly dark – it is around the sunset time. Sunset is of course a rather vague concept in helsinki since the sun tends to linger around the horizon for a long time. On that day, I saw the last beam of direct sunlight right before 10 p.m., but the twilight continued till past midnight. It never really gets quite dark, though by 1 a.m. the sky gets a bit darker than in those photos. Sort of like the sky looks in California about an hour after sunset. Such “night” only lasts around half an hour, however: by 1:30 a.m. the dawn is already quite noticeable.
