Rio’s famous New Year’s Eve got somewhat “spoiled” by the smoke, which however made the photographs of the fireworks a lot more dramatic than they tend to be. Supposedly, the mayor or Rio pledged to investigate the cause of the smoke and to withhold the payment for the fireworks if it turns out to be the fault of the contractor.
