The strip of land between the cliff and the sea is known as the "Low Town." One can get from Low Town to High Town by Elevador Lacerda, which costs 10 centavos (about 4 cents) - so cheap even by Brazilian standards that it makes me wonder why they bother charging money. (You need to stand in line to buy those 10 centavos tickets. But Bahia is all about waiting.) On both sides of the elevator one can see old buildings, with their backs to the cliff, mostly in appalling condition. Despite the fact that the building look like they might collapse any day, it appears that someone lives in them.
