After a brief walk through the town, we decided that it was easily worth the whole day. Ghent had the charm of an old city with medieval history city, while at the same time being a "real" town with a modern life of its own, including a Turkish neighborhood, where we had dinner the first night. (Our kebabs came with mayonnaise-toped french-fries, Belgian style.) As learned later, Ghent is in year 15 of a 20 year plan to restore the city and make it a major tourist attraction. This means, that they are pretty much done cleaning it up (supposedly it was pretty dirty 15 years ago), but the tourists are not there yet, so unlike Brugge.
