<p>I came across a Portuguese word I didn’t know while reading an email
message: <em>provem</em>. “What’s <em>provem</em>?” I asked Luisa. “It means
<em>comes from</em>,” she replied, “One of those words you are going to blog
about.” I wasn’t thinking of blogging about it, even though verbal
conjunctions involving irregular verbs (“pro” + “vir” in this case) do
often confuse me. You don’t get to learn them when you learn other
irregular verbs, yet they are essentially irregular. (If the “vir” of
“provir” wasn’t irregular, “comes from” would be “proviu”.) Part of
the problem is also that I can never remember the forms of “ver” (to
see) and “vir” (to come). Maybe I will remember them better by
blogging about it?</p>

<center><table class='real_table' width="80%">
<tr><td> </td> <td>ver (to see)</td> <td>vir (to come)</td></tr>
<tr><td colspan="3">Present</td>
<tr><td>Eu (I)</td> <td>vejo</td> <td>venho</td></tr>
<tr><td>Você/Ele/Ela (You/He/She)</td> <td>vê</td> <td>vem</td></tr>
<tr><td>Nos (We)</td> <td>vemos</td> <td>vimos</td></tr>
<tr><td>Vocês/Eles (You/They)</td> <td>vêem</td> <td>vêm</td></tr>
<tr><td colspan="3">Past</td>
<tr><td>Eu (I)</td> <td>vi</td> <td>vim</td></tr>
<tr><td>Você/Ele (You/He/She) </td> <td>viu</td> <td>veio</td></tr>
<tr><td>Nos (We)</td> <td>vimos</td> <td>viemos</td></tr>
<tr><td>Vocês/Eles (You/They)</td> <td>viram</td> <td>vieram</td></tr>
</table></center>

Is that crazy or what? Note how all past forms of *ver* start with
*vi*, or the subtle difference between *vêem* and *vêm*. Keeping
*vem* (he comes) and *vêm* (they come) in writing is a little easier,
and as I understand there is no difference in pronunciation. If there
were, I wouldn't know anyway, since the distinction between 'ê' and
'e' is completely lost on me.
