After [Pisac](http://www.freewisdom.org/en/andes2005/entries/2006/03/07/pisac_and_the_sacred) we made our way to Ollantaytambo by regular bus, from where we were hoping to catch an inconvenient but cheap (US$20 each way) train to Machu Picchu. The tickets for that train were sold out, however, so we ended up having to buy tickets for a more expensive train (paying a total of about $70 for the round trip) for the next morning. We showed up in "the town incorrectly known as Aguas Caliente" (they now prefer to be known as "Municipality of Machu Picchu") early next morning (it's 1-2 hours from Ollantaytambo) and immediately took a bus up to Machu Picchu. <~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_016_7939 Machu Picchu ruins from above 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_030_8579 Hayana Picchu, Machu Picchu, Peru 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_064_2750 The hut 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_084_1687 Machu Picchu terraces ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_091_6785 A temple damaged by sinking ground 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_099_3477 The Sun Altar 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_130_9771 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_147_2498 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_097_6649 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_212_2649 A llama 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_086_9849 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_128_6031 Machu Picchu 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_155_6182 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_230_2305 Machu Picchu at sunset 2005-12-19-b-machu-picchu-best/20051219_270_4790 Machu Picchu at sunset ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~> Machu Picchu was by far the most beautiful sight we encountered on our trip, surpassing even the best photos of it that I had seen before. The beauty of the place makes it easy to see why this relatively unimportant Inca fortress has captured the imagination of the whole world and why so many myths have been created about it. (The history of Machu Picchu pales in comparison with the views: it was a fortress contstructed in 15th century by the Incas to guard the road into the jungle. That's pretty much all that is known about it.) I took literally hundreds of pictures at Machu Picchu, so if you want more, there are two more albums: [More of Machu Picchu](http://www.freewisdom.org/en/all/albums/2005-12-19-d-more-machu-picchu/) and [A trail to the Inca Draw Bridge](http://www.freewisdom.org/en/all/albums/2005-12-19-c-inca-bridge/).
