Russian Stealing Verbs Page Content Page Name (for URL) Page Title Breadcrumb Text I was discussing with a friend my post about [Russian drinking verbs](http://www.freewisdom.org/en/all/entries/2006/09/26/russian_drinking_verbs/), and decided that I shouldn't leave people thinking that Russian only has extensive vocabulary for drinking-related stuff. Here is another list of verbs: * воровать (vorovat) - to steal habitually * E.g., when asked to describe Russia in just one word, a famous Russian historian replied: "Voruyut" (people steal habitually). * своровать (svorovat') - to steal something * поворовать (povorovat') - to have done some stealing and stopped * Often used in suggestions like "povorovali i khvatit" ("ok, they stole a bit, now is time to stop") * выворовывать (vyvorovyvat') - to extract something through stealing * обворовать (obvorovat') - to steal lots of things from the same person * подворовывать (podvorovyt') or приворовывать (privorovyvat') - to embezzle a little bit, as a side income * приворовываться (privorovat'sya) - to have found a position where one can embezzle safely * наворовать (navorovat') - to have stolen/embezzled a quantity of money that is enough for some specific goal * E..g, "Ivan navoroval sebe na dom" - "Ivan has already embezzled enough to buy himself a house" * навороваться (navorovat'sya) - to have stolen enough that you don't feel like stealing anymore * E.g., one could say about incumbent politicians that they "oni khotya by uzhe navorovalis'" - "at least they've already stolen enough to be happy," i.e., suggesting that we expect them to be stealing less now, unlike the new ones, which haven't yet stolen what they need. * переворовать (perevorovat') - to have stolen all of something over time * E.g. "Perevorovali vsekh loshadei" - "Eventually all the horses got stolen" * завороваться (zavorovat'sya) - to have gotten a stealing binge that one can't control * провороваться (provorovat'sya) - to have embezzled and gotten caught * довороваться (dovorovat'sya) - to have reached some undesirable end through uncontrolled stealing * "Boris dovorovalsya do tyur'my" - "Boris stole so much that he ended up in prison" * недоворовать (nedovarovat') - to steal less than everything * Sometimes used as a verb, but more often as participle - "nedovarovannoe" (that which hasn't been stole yet) * доворовывать (dovorovyvat') - to steal whatever is left * E.g., "Dovorovyvali poslenyuyu vodku" - "They were stealing whatever vodka remained". * разворовать (razvorovyvat') - to steal something by every person taking a little bit * E.g., "Razvorovali vsyu pribyl'" - "All the profit got embezzled, everyone taking a little bit" * развороваться (razvorovat'sya) - to grown comfortable stealing * извороваться (izvorovat'sya) - to have corrupted one's character through stealing too much Don't put anything here Advanced Fields Category 2002200320042005200620072008200920102011201220132014E.
