A friend of mine recently moved to Foster City, a small municipality next to San Mateo that I have heard of before but never been to. As it turned out, Foster City is built on a landfill that was turned into a network of canals (in 1960s, according to Wikipedia), turning it into a kind of strip mall Venice.
